Transport for NSW
NSW tertiary student Opal concession
Reduced Opal fares between home and an approved NSW institution.
Who can get it
- Live in NSW, and are an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
- Full-time, on-campus students at an approved institution, as your institution defines it. Other accredited courses need at least 16 hours a week of on-campus classes for six continuous weeks.
- International students only if they hold an Endeavour, Australia Awards or Research Training Program scholarship.
- Students with disability may qualify if they study part-time or externally.
How to claim
- Check your institution is on the approved list.
- Give your institution consent to share your details with Transport for NSW, then allow two business days.
- Check whether your student ID is accepted as proof. If not, apply online for a free Transport Concession Entitlement Card (TCEC).
- Apply for a Concession Opal card once you have proof of entitlement.
- Since 20 May 2026 you can tap with a linked bank card or device and still pay the concession fare.
Conditions and catches
- The TCEC is valid for up to 15 months. Renew it from 30 days before expiry, and by 31 March each year.
- The TCEC is tied to one institution. Reapply if you change.
- The concession is for travel between home and your institution.
- Transport for NSW doesn't state the size of the discount on this page, so no percentage is shown.
